Images of Ávila

When my mom and brother came to visit me at the beginning of June, I knew it was my last and final chance to make it to Ávila this year.  I had been itching to see the town famous for its impeccably preserved medieval walls, and they didn’t let me down. Our leisurely lunch with the most savory chuletón of my existence also did not let me down either.

Ávila also earns great fame for being the birthplace of Santa Teresa of Jesús, who in the last few decades was bestowed the title “Doctor of the Church”.  This year, 2015 happens to be the 500th Anniversary of the birth of this holy woman, reformer, and mystic. Her thoughts and experiences are forever preserved in the abundance of writings she left behind.  I happened to tuck one of her quotations into the corner of my bathroom mirror this year, finding strength in some of her words.

Trust in God

Let nothing disturb you,

nothing frighten you,

all things are passing.

God never changes.

Patience always conquers.

Whoever has God lacks nothing,

for God alone suffices.

St. Teresa of Ávila
